PhD: Development of a Surgical Force & Motion Analysis System
Delft, (Zuid-Holland), 38 hours per week Delft University of Technology

Job description
Minimally invasive surgical techniques require special manual skills. Accurate control of the surgical instruments is of utmost importance for dexterous performance and patient safety. To obtain automated assessment of dexterity, registration of instrument motion and forces is necessary. Combining motion analysis with an analysis of the forces enables the development of metrics and feedback systems to support the surgeon. In this project, the PhD student will integrate motion capture of the surgical instruments with force sensing into one measurement system, as well as develop analysis tools for assessment of skills in surgical tasks. The developed measurement and analysis tools should finally result in the clinical implementation of a surgical training system. The international nature of the research offers opportunities to travel and to work abroad. An applicability orientation is reflected by the department’s support to start-up companies.

The project is funded by Medical Delta - Health, Science & Technology (www.medicaldelta.nl), a consortium of Delft University of Technology, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus University Medical Centre Rotterdam (Erasmus MC), Leiden University and Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC). The research is conducted in close collaboration with LUMC and covers one clinical PhD student at LUMC and one in Biomechanical Engineering at DUT.

Giant Mechanical Elephant

January 30th, 2008

By François Delarozière and Pierre Oreficee, giant mechanical animals are exhibited at Nantes, France. Including the elephant, a squid and a manta ray. Site HERE.

I have an update on the ball bowling machines at the Krow's nest. They have just brought in another machine which brings them up to 6 large ball bowlers and one puck bowler for a total of 7 machines. The new machine is not ready to play yet and it will probably be a while before it is since it has to be restored before it can be enjoyed by the public. Here is a video showing the insides of the machine (holy crap its complex inside!). I will be keeping all the readers updated on the restoration of this wonderful machine with updates when they occur.

Parker's Electromechanical Automation Division has released MPP motor options for the HPLA and HLE configurables. Designed for demanding applications in high-performance servo systems, MPP motors offer lower inertia and higher power, all in a smaller package than conventional motors. The addition of these motors to the HPLA and HLE belt-driven product configurables makes creating a complete system, from actuator to gearhead to motor, easier than ever.

The configurable option includes mounting flanges and pinions for the MPP motors to be easily mounted in the field, or customers can save time and have the motors mounted directly at Parker. Parker still provides mounting hardware for thousands of different motor models and manufacturers. Parker has also released new feature of the HLE60 to match the HPLA product line feature set.

The HPLA and the entire HLE family offer easy belt tensioning implemented at the idler end of the actuator. This allows belt tensioning to be done without removing the load. Maintenance time is reduced and the machine will be up and running in no time with this easy-to-tension design style. This feature, coupled with the direct-mount gearbox design on the HPLA and the complete HLE family, reduce overall cost of ownership by as much as 20%.

'The new HLE60 design is just like the HPLA family with a belt tension station at the idler end of the actuator instead of the carriage', says Ben Furnish, Product Manager. 'The pulley on the motor end can now be mounted directly to the gearbox shaft instead of using couplings, again like the HPLA, and we have implemented standard configurables for the MPP motors on the HPLA/HLE family'.
