As a CAD specialist you need to develop standard mechanical engineering drawings such that it can be easily interpreted by the mechanical engineer. The fabrication drawing sometimes also includes referenced documents for heat treatment and stress relieving requirements, geometric tolerances and final machining details.

Assembly Drawings: Assembly drawings contains drawings of discrete sub-systems, assembly details of how the components, gearbox drawings, roller drawings and guard system drawings. It will include parts list identifying all of the member details with materials, quantities and supply details.

I have been coming across the problem of trying to perform Finite Element Analysis on a chassis made primarily from Structural Member Weldments

FEA can only be performed on a solid part so they need to be combined. The process that I am following is described below.

Export the part in IGES format:

File > Save as… > Save as type > IGES (*.igs)

Then import the exported part:

File > Open > *.iges

The imported part will consist of a large number of individual imported solids.

The imported solids are combined:

Insert > Feature > Combine…

Select all members of the chassis by drawing a box around them and click apply.

If you are lucky the operation will complete but if you are like me it may say the familiar “Operation would cause zero thickness geometry”. I diagnosed which member was causing the error by adding the members one by one to the combine feature and running “Preview” and then went back and edited the original model to fix the problem.

You can then start a new study and select the Combined feature. Note that this is to use a tetrahedral mesh. If your chassis is made entirely of weldments you can utilise the ‘Beam Mesh’ option.

Once you know the right capacity water heater for your home, you’ll need to take the unit’s dimensions into consideration.

A new, conventional hot water heating unit of the same capacity may actually be larger than the one you’re replacing. That’s because stricter federal energy standards require more insulation in water heaters’ walls. Keep this in mind if your old water heater is installed in a narrow closet or other close quarters. To keep the same capacity you’ve had, you may need to relocate your water heater.

If the original location is no longer big enough or if you are upgrading to a larger water heater, you’ll likely have to find a new, suitable location in your home. That means you’ll have to re-run your plumbing, a not insignificant additional expense on what is likely already a very expensive unforeseen emergency. One way your plumber can help you avoid relocating your heater is by selecting a non-standard size model, such as a shorter unit that is larger around, commonly referred to as a “low boy” hot water heater.

Another option which will allow you to use the same location for your heater, even if it is too small, is to switch from a traditional unit to a tankless water heater. Tankless heaters are significantly smaller because they do not have a storage tank. Using either gas or electric heating element, they can heat enough water on demand to satisfy the needs of your household.
